This talk asks: how are these transitions experienced by mining communities? Using insights from research in Western Colorado and Central Appalachia, Dr. Harris will discuss the shifting reality of mines in this emerging framework.
Dylan M. Harris is an assistant professor of geography and environmental studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). His work focuses on the stories we tell (and don’t tell) about socioecological change, focusing specifically on the procedural elements of climate and energy justice. He is interested in work that exists at the intersection of change, drawing from what he terms experimental and speculative political ecology to critically study the unequal power structures informing many “transition” projects (e.g., carbon offsets) while also aiming to disrupt them, pointing towards more equitable possibilities, through interventionist research.

This class will take place over the course of three hours. We will start in the hoop houses, where participants will witness the digging of dahlia crowns firsthand. After this, we will move to an on-site classroom where we will provide hands-on learning for tuber division and proper storage. Necessary class materials will be provided, as well as light refreshments. An extensive array of tubers will be available for purchase at the end of class, allowing participants to start or add to their dream dahlia garden come spring!

Showed up for STEM event and left a fan. This museum is not like any other mining museum i had been to. I working blacksmith and stamp mill was a pleasant touch. Flourscent Blacklight Mineral room is also a winner. Its an affordable and educational experience that is worth the value.
