Lecture Series - Bob DeWitt: Gone but not Forgotten, Early Coal Camps of Southern Huerfano County

Tuesday, November 11, 2025
4:00 pm5:00 pm

Colorado with its multitude of thousands of ghost towns, mining camps and railroad sites lends the opportunity to research and explore even though many former sites have been lost to development. At these places, in these little time capsules of an era long gone, the non-glamorous work of the coal miner, farmer, and small business owner ruled and was so crucial to the existence of their families. Bob believes that the saga of the coal miners has been under appreciated and infrequently written about (with few exceptions). Coal mining was not in any way, a fashionable occupation such as gold or silver mining. This presentation will illustrate the personal side of these mining communities as well as share many great historic photos.

Showed up for STEM event and left a fan. This museum is not like any other mining museum i had been to. I working blacksmith and stamp mill was a pleasant touch. Flourscent Blacklight Mineral room is also a winner. Its an affordable and educational experience that is worth the value.
